Womens Letters of Recommendation Fall Flat

…compared to men’s. Based on the language commonly used in recommendation letters for women versus men, a Rice University study concluded that employers viewed men’s recommendation letters more favorably.

The language describing women in letters is more “communal” — words like “affectionate,” “helpful,” and “kind.” Men are more often described as “confident,” “aggressive,” and “outspoken.”

Your Go-To Work ‘Do?

by Emma / November 15, 2010 / 14 comments

Your Go To Work Do?

I’ve been growing my hair out for awhile lately. Now it’s pretty long: past shoulder-length. It’s really thick too, which makes for a long time fixing it if I want to wear it down. My go-to in-a-pinch hairstyle for work is a low bun. I think it looks best if you spray some volumizer throughout the hair first, tease at the crown for shape, and then run some mousse through your ponytail so that all the loose pieces won’t stick out of the bun at odd angles.

As a side note, I drool over Blake Lively’s hair. She’s fearless, and it always looks so perfectly undone.

For those of you embarking on your first job, shopping for work clothes can be daunting. Unless you’re very serious about college or grad school, you probably weren’t wearing business attire to your classes. Starting a job presents a wardrobe paradigm shift.

I put together this guide to building a basic work wardrobe. Nothing flashy or daring, but a good collection of separates and staples that you can mix and match to create multiple outfits. These basics will also provide a great foundation as you gradually add more unique, daring pieces to your wardrobe.

Conversations in the Bathroom: Do or Dont?

When I was a summer associate at a law firm, a female partner made a surprising connection between bathroom breaks and women in the workforce. Back in the 80s, when she was often the only female lawyer in the conference room, the men would continue their work conversations during breaks in the men’s room, excluding her from communications. To her, this reflected her outsider status — she was trying to make it in a man’s world.

The Worst (and Best) About Workplace Bathrooms

I have a proposition for you: An office bathroom says a ton about workplace culture, management’s respect for employees, and it can also have an effect on morale. I do think a lot of companies realize this, and their managements invest in nice bathrooms. But there are also some terrible office bathrooms out there.

Here’s what I think goes into a basic, good, and perk-tastic workplace bathroom. See if you agree, or let me know what I’ve missed.

Halloween, Your Office, and You

Halloween, Your Office, and You

For a lot of us, the things in this title never intersect. A commenter on a Linkin’ Around post, however, brought up the topic of Halloween costumes at work. Which, now that I’m thinking about it, could be really fun! (As long as you don’t work in a stuffy workplace like mine.)

Some advice for pulling this off from around the web and some ideas, after the jump.

When Bosses Become Too… Bossy

When Bosses Become Too... Bossy

Unless you’re self-employed, chances are you work for a boss or have a supervisor. Bosses can be great mentors and role models, but sometimes, bosses can be a little too… bossy. How do you deal with bosses whose “tough love” feels a bit more like boot camp? When should you speak up?

Should You... Touch People at Work?

Okay, this is going to be kind of a strange post. Especially for me, because I’ve never been a naturally affectionate or touchy-feely person. The idea of patting a stranger’s back, or even a friend’s back, really weirds me out. But that’s another story for another day.

Today’s story is that physical contact can communicate messages and spur activity that words alone could never do. Implementing some of these techniques might help you at work.

A couple commenters took issue with the price tag of the Shoshanna sheath dress featured in the retro chic workwear look.

While I stand by the dress because I think some people (including myself) splurge on items every now and then, I took the hint and gathered up some affordable sheath options for the office (plus one more expensive choice I couldn’t resist).

Staying Sane During Long Working Hours

Working 9 to 5, day after day, is already hard as it is. But as we all know, work doesn’t always start when we get to the office or end when we leave. A normal 8 hour day can find itself stretching into a 12 hour one! Plus, some of us find ourselves working through the weekend from time to time. This is all a part of life and we have to find ways to deal with it somehow, right?

Here are some tips on how to stay sane during long work hours.
