Linkin Around

In this Friday’s link round up we’ve got social dysfunction in a cartoon, great desk lamp options, advice on how “freshness” can help you get a raise, the Jonathan Franzen hoopla, and how to shop on a budget.

1. What Happens When You Work From Home: In Pictures

I shared this on Twitter, but it’s so darn funny I have to post about it as well. My favorite section is the one on social skills.

2. Over 30 Desk Lamp Options for under $100

Choose one, or choose them all — you could have a desk lamp garden in your living room. These are great options, but I have a recommendation too: Forsa lamp from IKEA, only $30 but look much more expensive. I have two of them.

3. Advice from Summer’s Eve for Women on Getting a Raise: “Make Sure Everything’s Fresh Down There”

Yikes. An example of the melding of practical advice and advertisement gone wrong. The offending article was published in Women’s Day. What were you thinking, people?

4. The Case against the Media’s Love of Jonathan Franzen

Have you been following the debate about female versus male novelists? Seems everyone’s talking about it, and the things being said are interesting. Jodi Picoult, among others, claims that literary establishments don’t take female writers seriously. Jezebel’s provided a great synopsis of the controversy.

5. Getting a Professional Look without Bankrupting Yourself

Sometimes, my whims and fancies lead me to post career fashion suggestions that are a tad… pricey. (In my defense, the J-Lo watch was only $57.) But if you’re working on a tight budget and need clothes now, Shayna Leah’s on the case.
