I’m a big fan of Mad Men. Who isn’t these days? I have a total girl crush on Christina Hendricks, and the wardrobes and sets make me weak in the knees.
Unfortunately, society in the 60s was misogynistic and racist. Sometimes I think the show goes too far in glamorizing the misogynism, but in general it does a good job of subtly criticizing the rampant discrimination.
This Clorox commercial, however, has me seeing red.
The commercial picks up the glamorizing of misogynism where the show leaves off, throws overboard any attempt at criticism or deeper social commentary, and doesn’t even have the show’s excuse of historical accuracy. This is a modern commercial that capitalizes on the idyllic (to some) world Mad Men portrays, where successful men are rewarded with beautiful secretaries whose job is to get more ice and assist in keeping wives in the dark.
I don’t get why this commercial was made. I’m sure people will say that I’m taking it too seriously — but that’s sort of my point. It’s distasteful to me to think of today’s society seeing this commercial and thinking it clever, funny, or creative. Blegh.

Well I’m sure it would be a great commercial in the 60′s… :) Let’s give them that!
